Katie. Because of you, am. Totally in love with Anne. She has so many quirks and foibles I remember having (probably still share, to some degree *g*), and I think a lot of little girls share. That adults can be flawed (i.e., gossipy, even BOSSY)and still valued friends and allies, helps a great deal too. Because *most* children's lit would automatically code such adults as antagonists: L.M. Montgomery's reading and portrayal of everyone is beautifully nuanced and complex, from Anne's adopted family, to Gilbert who adores her, and teased her. Sara Crewe is still first in my heart for little Victorian heroines (admittedly, probably because I read her first 8}) but Anne's sitting quite near her, and somewhere in my brain, they're probably swapping stories and cooing over Melchiandec (sp?) and Emily.
nd see, the Christian thing...when you mentioned it and I winced, I was thinking of the kind of overt sledgehammer evangelism of A Little White Horse. It's ALREADY quite full of disturbing crack in itself: that it has a kind of snobbish superiority towards non-religious folk AUTOMATICALLY sets my hackles raised (as those of you who know me well know. 8g*) The Christianity in Anne of Green gables isn't like that: they're genuinely HAPPY people. They love their faith, they're proud of their faith: they don't HAVE to sigh dramatically and sadly over the misguided folks who don't share them and INCONVENIENCE them by tipsaing over "their" land. Never mind that it's supposed to be their land too. The folks in Anne of Green Gables... they lack this snobbish spite. There aren't any constructed Others who they lord over. They're just kind to each other. And they're a real community, and real people in a way the happy "Duloc is a perfect place" paper cut outs of Little White Horse is definitely not.
Sorry. I've been fuming about that book for a while. Kenya tell?
And to everyone who hasn't seen HP yet (i.e.Aussie friends): Nyeeeeeeeh.;p This means YOU Katie, and Lisa, and the two Michaels, and Nyssa, and...I have seen the glory and the beauty that is the Goblet of Fire, and it is good! (Kae, Myka, Therese? Ralph? Janie and Chii?who wants to see it again with me? XD)I've also seen the Superman Returns trailer, and smack me for pointing out the obvious, but holy cow. It's different seeing it on the Big Screen than the itsy bitsy wmp window. 8} It's beautiful, and grand, and nostalgic, and I can't wait for the longer trailers. (I can't wait for the movie either, but that's MUCH further off.)
