Mar. 8th, 2004 10:51 pmSorry friends, I just had to post this. Feel free to ignore: it's just so utterly ridiculous...
Specifically, it concerns our new Head of College, Dr. Jane Munro. Who seems to be doing everything she can antagonize the student body. First, she insists on being called by the title Dr: an amazing thing to do in a culture that prides itself on being egalitarian and disdaining of hierarchical distinctions. And even more so in a casual, family- oriented college like International House, where the first thing impressed on first year students is that it's okay (and even *expected*) to call authority figures by their first names. Respect is paid in other ways, and it's given freely. Then today at Dinner, Daniel, who's been working very very hard on our yearbook, announces that she wants him to change the yearbook cover. Why? Because it features our old Head of College, Don Stewart, smiling and being portrayed "in a casual light," which she deems as inappropriate.
Naturally, all of are upset. Don was, and is still a beloved, parental figure in the College. And whatever her intentions, this almost like an attack on *him.* And even more so because her decision makes no *sense.* Don saw the cover last year: he approved, he was pleased by it, and if he was all right with it, who is she to take offense?! If she wishes to assert her authority and position as the new Head, which I can sympathize with, antagonizing us is hardly the way to go. And on so little a thing! A yearbook cover?! Does she feel we are undermining her authority by remembering Don?!
(lady, wiping him off the cover isn't going to make us love or miss him any less. And it certainly won't make us respect you more)
And this, after a throughly uninspiring session in Creative Writing (I feel like a hack, and am throughly convinced my teacher feels I *am* one, w/c isn't helping matters)would have been a crappy end to a crappy day, with Gothic Lit as the only high point. ;p As it turns out however...there are some consolations...
Specifically, running up to the computer room to update my journal I met a fellow LOTR fanfic lover (&writer). :D Her name is Nassa, she's in first year Melbourne Uni, loves English Lit (hooray!), and wonder of wonders, she likes slash too. *Happy* I am not so alone Down Under after all, my friends! :D I just need to come out of the closet more!
