layangabi...so long as they taste like pancakes, that is.
No seriously! It's my fourth year at IH, my last Valedict's dinner so I thought: why the hell not? So I spiked my orange drink with white wine, which was quite nice, then we had champagne, listened to a few drunken speeches, toasted to MANY things, sang Auld Lang Syne. Then as always, everyone went for pubs. It might have been the alchohol I drank, the nostalgia, the fact that it's my last year here, but for the first time since first year, I decided to come along.
Penny persuaded me to try a "pancake shot." Er...I forgot what the liquor itself is called, but it's a hazelnut liquor made by monks (!) and you have it with sugar around the rim and a slice of lemon. You skal it down, and bite the lemon afterwards and it actually does taste like pancakes. I was very giggly and happy afterwards, and wanted more. Why cannot all alcohol taste like this? Would be avid alcoholic by now if it did.
Sour part of the evening came when Penny and I sat down in a corner to chat...and these two HUGE guys sat down next to us and blocked our way. "We just want to chat, we're not here to pick you up." Er...
They then proceeded to regale us with manly, manly tales of hunting down gerbils and getting bitten by them, in a heroic effort to save the Australian ecosystem. The only thing that saved us was a fellow male colleger passing by, and deliberately striking up a chat with two guys in order to let us slip by, and run all the way back home. GAH. I don't know how to thank Bowen enough.
